2 October is the International Day of Non-Violence

Some violence is loud. Some happens in silence: inside a home, inside a screen, inside a body. Every 2 October, the world remembers an idea that is simple and hard: peace begins where no one is treated as a thing.

2 October is the International Day of Non-Violence. The date honours the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, born in 1869, the leader who turned resistance without weapons into a political and moral path.

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/61/271 and made the day official. Its aim: to spread, through education and public awareness, a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding.

In 2026, the theme of the United Nations commemoration is “Non-Violence as a Means to Peace and Development”. The phrase says there is no development where there is fear.

A child who suffers violence learns less. A woman who is threatened works less. A person who is exploited, trafficked or humiliated loses more than safety: they lose a future. Non-violence is not passivity; it is the condition for education, health and work to exist.

This is Sofonie Dala. She is not a statue or a figure from a history textbook: she is a living woman who decided to turn what happened to her into testimony.

She describes years of violence against her mind, her education, her dignity and her digital life. Then the struggle reached her own body. Instead of silence, she chose to write, to keep evidence and to speak, which is why, on this 2 October, the tribute carries her name.

It began with small signs. Sores in her mouth after eating grapes in the United Kingdom. A health screening with a negative result, followed by a prolonged infection. Clothes and personal belongings that kept disappearing. Sofonie records the sequence without claiming the cause.

Later came voluntary work on a farm and a lemon juice she believes was contaminated. There were months, between December 2024 and August 2025, when she had no money to seek medical help or buy medication. There were infections, pain, changes to her scalp. And there is the episode in which she says she was exposed to sewage water in the shower.

Sofonie believes that substances or procedures that would normally go through animal testing were used on her body, without her informed consent. It is her conviction, built from dates, symptoms and objects. No independent investigation has yet confirmed or disproved it, and that is exactly what she is asking for.

“I was not only fighting violence against my mind, my education, my dignity and my digital life. I was fighting for the safety of my own body.”

Sofonie does not ask to be believed on faith. She asks to be checked. She keeps medical records, photographs, dates, the products involved and the testimonies of those who saw, so that an independent investigation can do what pain alone cannot: separate what is suspected from what is proven.

Gandhi showed that non-violence is a force. Sofonie Dala shows that it is also a demand: non-violence must mean that no human being is treated as an experiment, deprived of medical care, exposed to deliberate harm, or denied the dignity of their own body.

On this 2 October, listen. Document. Protect. And demand that every testimony be investigated, not forgotten.
